When I was diagnosed with terminal stage 4 cancer, I did everything the doctors told me. I went through the chemo. I sat through the radiation. I followed every protocol they threw at me.
And then the cancer came back.
Worse than before.
After all that suffering, I sat in a doctor’s office and heard the words:
“There’s nothing more we can do. You should go home and get your affairs in order.”
Nobody offered me a refund.
Nobody apologized.
Nobody took responsibility.
That’s when I realized: if I wanted to live, I had to stop following the system.
Because the system wasn’t designed to save me…it was designed to bill me.
So I started looking into holistic, metabolic, and alternative therapies. And guess what?
They worked.
I’ve been cancer-free for over two years now.
But here’s the truth: insurance didn’t cover a single one of those treatments.
Not the hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
Not the IV vitamin C.
Not the nutrition plans.
Nothing.
So how did I pay for it?
Let me walk you through the three smart, life-saving strategies we used to fund my healing journey.

1. Use a Health Savings Account (HSA), If You Qualify
Let’s start with what should be an obvious tool, but no one talks about: an HSA, or Health Savings Account.
An HSA is a tax-free account you can use to pay for medical expenses…yes, including many holistic and integrative treatments. Things like:
- Visits to a naturopathic doctor
- IV vitamin C and ozone therapy
- Hyperbaric oxygen sessions
- Supplements and vitamins (with a doctor’s note)
- Fresh produce if it’s part of your prescribed nutrition plan
- Even chiropractic and massage therapy if prescribed
Here’s the kicker: you need to be on a high-deductible health plan to qualify. That’s why it didn’t work for me. But if you’re healthy enough to switch plans, or already have a high-deductible policy, this could be a huge win.
Your employer might even contribute to your HSA, and that money rolls over year after year. So if you’re someone who’s trying to be proactive with your care, this is a really smart move.

2. Switch to a Medical Sharing Plan And Pay Cash
Once we realized our insurance was burning a hole in our bank account while doing nothing to help us heal, we made a bold decision:
We canceled our traditional insurance and joined a medical sharing plan.
We chose Christian Healthcare Ministries. There are others, but here’s how they work:
- You pay into a shared pool with other members
- They help cover your conventional care (oncology, MRIs, CT scans)
- You become a cash payer at hospitals and clinics
This is a big deal.
When you’re a cash payer, you’re no longer playing by the insurance company’s rules.
You pay the doctor directly.
You ask for an itemized receipt (critical tip…don’t skip this).
And most of the time, you end up paying less than the “insured” rate.
I had hospitals fight us when we asked for these receipts, because the whole system is built around hiding the real cost of care. But we stayed firm.
That savings became our funding for alternative therapies.
And listen: we saved over $1,000 a year by switching to a sharing plan. That money went straight to IV therapy, juicing, detox treatments, and more.
One note: you can’t use an HSA with a medical sharing plan. So you’ve got to choose one or the other.

3. Let People Help You, Fundraising Works
This one might be the hardest. It was for me.
When I got sick, I felt embarrassed. Weak. Ashamed. Even though I had spent years helping people and making an impact, I didn’t want to ask for help. I didn’t want to be a burden.
But my mentor stepped in and said,
“We’re going to raise money for you. And you don’t have to do anything.”
And they did. My friends and community raised over $120,000 through a GoFundMe campaign.
That money paid for:
- A hyperbaric oxygen chamber
- A personal sauna
- Dozens of IV therapy sessions
- Organic produce and supplements
- Two full years of healing
Was it easy? No.
Did I feel weird about it? At first, yes.
But I’m alive. And I get to wake up every morning and see my kids and hear them make noise while I try to record YouTube videos!
That’s worth everything.
If you’re holding back because you don’t think people will give… I want to tell you the truth:
They will.
But you have to let them.
Even raising $10,000 or $25,000 could completely change your options.

BONUS: Credit Cards Are Not the Enemy
Here’s one more that might surprise you:
We put our treatments on a credit card.
Not because we were reckless. But because it was smarter than paying $600/month to an insurance company that wouldn’t lift a finger for us.
By canceling our insurance and redirecting that money to pay down a single card, we:
- Got access to the care we wanted
- Built credit
- Earned airline miles (which covered travel to treatment centers)
We didn’t go into crazy debt…we were just strategic.
I call it alternative funding.
If you’ve been brainwashed to believe that credit cards are evil and insurance is good…
you might need a mindset shift.
Because your healing is more important than your fear of debt.
And paying $600/month for care that doesn’t work is the real trap.
Final Thoughts
You can’t heal inside a system that profits off your illness.
And your insurance company isn’t going to save you…they’re going to stall, deny, and say “no” until it’s too late.
You have options.
You have power.
You are not alone.
If you want to hear from others who are walking this same path, I’ve created a cancer support group where we talk about treatments, mindset, funding, and real healing. We’d love to have you.
