Should You Be Fasting With Cancer?

What Your Doctor Won’t Say About Fasting

When I was diagnosed, I was scared.

Doctors gave me numbers.
Prognoses.
Treatment options.

Words that felt heavy, technical and honestly, hard to process.

In the middle of all that, one question kept circling in my head:

Is there something more I can do than just sit in a chair and take chemo?

That’s how I came across fasting.
Not the “skip breakfast” kind of fasting. I’m talking about medically supervised, water-only fasting, a therapy that works with your body’s natural ability to reset and repair itself from the inside out.

And it made a difference in my life.

But don’t just take my word for it.

I spoke with Dr. Alan Goldhamer, founder of TrueNorth Health Center, who’s supervised more than 25,000 water fasts. What he shared gave me a new perspective, and it might do the same for you.

So let’s get into it. No fluff. No gimmicks. Just what you need to know if you’re facing cancer and wondering whether fasting could help.

Table of Contents

Fasting Isn’t a Diet, It’s a Reset Button for Your Body

Fasting isn’t about willpower. It’s about autophagy…a natural process where your body clears out damaged cells, junk proteins, and stuff that shouldn’t be there.

When you stop feeding your body constantly, it stops focusing on digestion and starts focusing on healing.

And if you’re dealing with cancer? That means removing the metabolic fuel that tumors thrive on sugar and constant calories.

But it’s deeper than that. Dr. Goldhammer explained that fasting ramps up your immune system and strips away visceral fat, the dangerous stuff wrapped around your organs that fuels inflammation and disease..

“If you take someone in a resting state, fasting can reduce visceral fat by up to 40%. That’s the fat that drives inflammation, autoimmune issues, and yeah…cancer.”
    — Dr. Goldhammer

My takeaway? Fasting isn’t magic. It’s just letting your body do what it was designed to do when it’s not busy digesting burgers and processed snacks.

Who Should Not Fast (And How to Know If You’re Ready)

Fasting can be powerful but it’s not for everyone. The last thing you want is to jump in the wrong way and hurt yourself.

Here’s what Dr. Goldhamer told me about when fasting may not be safe:

    • You need reserves, generally a BMI above 18. Below that, fasting can become dangerous.
    • You must be off medications, especially things like blood thinners or steroids. These can be potentiated during fasting, meaning they hit harder and mess you up fast.
    • You must be ready to REST. Not work. Not run errands. Not parent four kids like I was. Real fasting requires stillness, supervision, and intention.

If you’re unsure, Dr. Goldhamer’s clinic even offers free phone consultations to help determine if fasting is a safe fit. That gave me a lot of peace of mind.

Why Fasting Might Work Better Than Treatment, But That Doesn’t Mean It Replaces It

Here’s what I learned from Dr. Goldhamer: in some cases, fasting can be more effective than treatment. Especially with conditions like lymphoma, where standard therapies don’t always improve survival.

“Fasting isn’t always enough on its own, especially with fast-spreading or metastatic disease. But it can reduce the side effects of conventional treatments — and in some cases, even make treatment unnecessary.”
    — Dr. Alan Goldhamer

That gave me a new perspective. Fasting isn’t a magic bullet, but it’s a practical tool that can work alongside other therapies and give your body a better chance.

The Secret to a Successful Fast: REST

Most people don’t realize this: thinking burns glucose. Mental activity, stress, and overworking can push your body to burn lean tissue instead of fat.

Dr. Goldhamer explains it like this:

“Your brain is your biggest consumer of glucose. If you’re fasting but stressed out and working, you’re not fasting — you’re starving.”
    — Dr. Alan Goldhamer

At TrueNorth, patients are required to rest, meditate, and slow down. Fasting isn’t the time to be productive — it’s the time to heal.

The real trap isn’t fasting. It’s paying for care that leaves you weaker, while ignoring the healing that comes from simply resting.

Breaking the Fast: How to Refeed Without Undoing It All

If you end your fast with pizza and soda, you’re not refeeding, you’re wrecking your gut.

“Refeeding syndrome is real, and people can die from it. We take half the length of the fast just to reintroduce food slowly and safely.”
    — Dr. Goldhammer

    What does that look like?

    • Days 1–2: Fresh vegetable juices
    • Days 3–4: Raw fruits and veggies
    • Days 5–7: Steamed veggies, starchy foods like potatoes and rice
    • Day 8+: Slowly introducing more variety—but all SOS-free: No salt, oil, or sugar.

Why? Because those three things are dopamine bombs that hijack your hunger cues and drive you back into disease.

Stage 4 Cancer and Fasting: Is It Too Late?

I asked Dr. Goldhamer what he’d say to a room of stage 4 cancer patients, people like me, at one point. His answer was clear:

“Ask your doctor for data. Ask them: does this treatment help me live longer, or just make me less miserable? If they can’t show you the numbers, you need to rethink the plan.”
    — Dr. Alan Goldhamer

    That isn’t anti-doctor. It’s pro-you.

Your job isn’t to blindly follow. It’s to take ownership of your healing.

Fasting Changes More Than Your Body, It Changes Your Spirit

There’s a reason every major religion has a fasting tradition.

You come face to face with yourself when you fast. No food to comfort you. No distractions to numb you. Just you, your thoughts, and your body doing what God created it to do…heal.

Final Thoughts: Is Fasting With Cancer a Good Idea?

    It depends.
Fasting is powerful. It’s natural. It’s ancient.

But it’s also serious. And if you’re considering it, you need to do it right. Get guidance. Get supervision. Don’t try to lone-wolf this thing and end up making it worse.

Dr. Goldhammer’s clinic at TrueNorth is one of the best in the world for supervised fasting. That’s where I went. That’s where lives are being changed.

But here’s the thing: you don’t have to figure this out alone.

That’s why I created a private community for people like us..people who are ready to take control of their health, learn the truth about healing, and connect with others who’ve been in the fight.

Whether you’re just starting to research fasting… or you’ve already started your journey… this group is where we go deep, share real results, and support each other with no fluff and no fear.

You deserve a space where people “get it.” A space where questions are answered, strategies are shared, and you feel empowered…not overwhelmed.
